Take part in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) 2021

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is a national survey conducted by institutions across the UK. The survey provides insight into the experience of PGRs, from the supervisory support they receive to the facilities they have access to. PRES results are used to identify what is working well and what needs to be improved.

The PRES provides you with an opportunity to let us know about your experiences, both good and bad, so we can identify what has gone well and understand better what need to improve on. The 2021 survey will open on 15 April and runs until the 17 May. Once we have we have the results we will be identifying areas for improvement.

Why should I take part?

This is your chance to tell us your thoughts about your programme. The results help us to identify the changes that we need to make to improve what we do and to keep doing the things that you value. The results also help us compare how we are doing with other institutions.

What does it cover?

PRES covers your entire programme and will include questions about supervision, resources, research culture, progress and assessment, responsibilities, research skills and professional development, opportunities, wellbeing and your overall experience.

What happens to the results?

Your feedback is important. Over one hundred universities and colleges take part in the UK and globally. This means we can compare your experience against similar postgraduates at other institutions to see if we are supporting your learning as we should. We use the findings to make improvements.

What actions were taken after the last PRES?

You can see the results and action plans from the 2019 survey. Since the last survey as a University we have:

  • Launched a toolkit for PGR supervisors.
  • Increased PGR representation at Manchester Doctoral College Strategy Group.
  • Launched two online modules for supervisors on supporting their PGR's wellbeing and mental health.

The action plans show initiatives at a School and Faculty level.

Is it anonymous?

Your survey response is confidential to the team processing the results and no reporting outside of this team will identify any individual. All reported results will be anonymised. The survey asks that any comments you make should not identify yourself or any specific members of staff.

What do I need to do?

You will receive an email with a link to the questionnaire on 15 April. Simply click on the link and complete the online form. The survey is open until 17 May 2021.

Where can I find out more?

If you are unsure about anything to do with the survey, or have any difficulty, please contact Claire Faichnie, PGR and Researcher Development Manager, claire.faichnie@manchester.ac.uk.
